Books and Bodies: Medical Heritage of the Low Countries
Embark on an exclusive, custom-tailored journey through the Low Countries to explore the historic intersection of anatomical science, the printing press, and Dutch Golden Age art. Led by WashU expert Elisabeth Brander, director of the Center for the History of Medicine and head of rare books at the Bernard Becker Medical Library, this immersive program offers a rare look at the landmarks that shaped modern medicine.
In Amsterdam, dine in the 15th-century Waag building—the very room where Rembrandt sketched his famous anatomy lessons. Go behind the scenes in Brussels for a private viewing of rare early editions of Vesalius’s De Humani Corporis Fabrica, and visit the former hospital in Leiden where bedside clinical teaching was pioneered. From the world’s oldest printing presses in Antwerp to the scientific treasures of Haarlem, this journey invites WashU Medicine alumni to stand where medical history was made.
